Pi Agent

Pi Agent is a terminal-first coding agent designed around the principle that an agent harness should adapt to the developer, not the other way around. Pi Agent lives at https://pi.dev/ and is published by Earendil Inc. It runs as a TUI in the terminal, exposes a tree-structured session history, supports skills and project instructions, and is unusually token-efficient because of its minimal default system prompt. The tagline is "There are many agent harnesses, but this one is yours."

The runtime is shipped in four modes. Interactive mode is the full terminal user interface with rich keyboard shortcuts and a customisable TUI. Print mode runs Pi Agent headlessly from a shell script with a single query. JSON mode streams structured events from a run for piping into other tools. RPC mode exposes Pi Agent over a JSON protocol on stdin and stdout, allowing non-Node processes to drive it. An SDK lets developers embed Pi Agent inside their own apps, with the documentation pointing to OpenClaw as a real-world example of an SDK integration.

Pi Agent is provider-agnostic. It supports Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Azure, Bedrock, Mistral, Groq, Cerebras, xAI, Hugging Face, Kimi For Coding, MiniMax, NVIDIA, OpenRouter and Ollama, with API key or OAuth authentication. The /model command switches models mid-session, Ctrl+P cycles through favourites, and custom providers can be registered through a models.json file or extensions.

Context engineering is a first-class concern. Pi Agent loads AGENTS.md instructions from ~/.pi/agent, parent directories and the current working directory, supports per-project SYSTEM.md overrides, auto-summarises older messages via compaction, and ships a skills system for capability packages loaded on demand. Prompt templates are reusable Markdown prompts invoked by typing /name. Extensions, written in TypeScript, can inject context before each turn, filter the message history, implement RAG or build long-term memory. Sessions are tree-structured, can be branched with /tree, exported to HTML with /export, and pushed to a GitHub gist with /share to get a shareable URL.

Pi Agent is for developers who want a coding agent that bends to their workflow rather than bending their workflow around it.
